Our most recent novel that we dove into was Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. While we have heard many things about the great Mr. Darcy from my sister, who even named her cat after him, we had not read what was so wonderful ourselves. So, I decided it was time to add it to our reading list this semester.
I can see how many find this to be a comfort story. It is one that fans can reread and enjoy many times over. The relationships built throughout the story suck you in and you either love their personalities you loathe them. Those surprise villains keep the story interesting, though!
The kids love a legendary romance but had yet to read one set in the Regency Era, where the rules for love were quite different from those they are today, so this was perfect.
I didn't want to approach the novel like we had before—by typing their answers into Google Slides. So, this time, I designed a small binder full of journaling questions that they were to answer in cursive and using the vocabulary of Austen's time. Think Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton style. Although they've never seen that series, I let them watch the trailers on YouTube to get a vibe.
They were given the option of reading the paperback novel or listening to the audiobook. I personally prefer the audiobook with the British accent, which is available on Spotify.
They must imagine themselves in Elizabeth Bennett's shoes and determine her Enneagram. They must also pick a character to discover their love language.
Also included in the unit is a video about Austen's love of satire, more fun facts, and a fun lesson titled "Date, Mate, Relate, or Hate."
We also plan to watch the Kiera Knightly version of the film.
