Home Economics

One of my favorite courses in high school was home economics. I felt at home in that class. We got to cook, bake, sew, and learn many essential tools. I loved wood shop, too, which seemed to oddly go hand in hand with Home Ec. I plan to get my kiddos involved in creating some stuff with a saw soon, but we began with the basics of homekeeping.

I didn't plan to design an actual Home Ec course, but my kids insisted. They asked to learn certain things, such as embroidery. I also added punch needling, which is trendy right now, to the lessons.

They wanted more independence in the kitchen, which I can appreciate. In our home, the cook doesn't clean, so I think they were desperate to learn how to cook to avoid the dreaded chore of washing dishes. I totally understand. That chore is now my own on Tuesdays. I do enjoy a warm, homemade meal from them, though, so it's worth it for all of us.

I dove into the Internet, hunting down printables, articles, recipes, lessons, kits, etc., that would tie into the course. I bought the punch needle kit from Michael's Craft Store (the link is in the lesson). I also purchased these Muslin blankets for them to embroider. They chose to embroider their pet's name, which turned out beautifully.
